The North Carolina
General Assembly has approved a $100 per student
increase in both the Legislative Tuition Grant (LTG) and
the State Contractual Scholarship Fund (SCSF) for
2006-07. The LTG provides $1,900 to every full-time,
North Carolina resident enrolled in one of the
state's 36 private colleges and universities. An
additional $1,250 per full-time equivalent student is
awarded to the institution to provide grants of varying
amounts to the most financially-needy students.
Legislators are being asked to provide additional
funding for 2007-08.

The Independent College
Fund has been awarded a nearly $1.296 million grant from
The Golden LEAF Foundation for students who reside in a
tobacco-dependent county, maintain a 2.5 GPA and are
financially needy. This grant will support eight
students (two in each class) at each of the thirty-six
independent colleges and universities in North Carolina.
Students will receive a $4,500 over three semesters
beginning with spring 2007 and ending in spring 2008.

Duke University
Duke University received a $5 million endowed
gift from the Crown family of Chicago. The gift will
provide $4 million for need-based undergraduate
scholarships, $750,000 for undergraduate summer
fellowships and $250,000 for athletic scholarships. A
member of the Crown family, Paula Hannaway Crown is a
Duke alumna and trustee.
Queens University of Charlotte
Queens University of Charlotte received a $25,000
gift from the GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, increasing its
endowment at Queens to $50,000. The gift endows a
scholarship for up to two female undergraduate students
majoring in scientific studies.

Bennett College for
Women
Bennett College for Women has announced the appointment of Dr. Julianne
Malveaux as the 15th president of the college. Dr.
Malveaux received her BA and MA in economics from Boston
College and earned a Ph.D. in economics from MIT. She
will assume the presidency on June 1, 2007.
Davidson College
The Davidson College
Board of Trustees elected Thomas W. Ross, Sr., as the
college's 17th president. A Davidson alum and former
North Carolina Superior Court Judge, Mr. Ross serves as
executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation
in Winston-Salem. He will take office on August 1, 2007.
Lenoir-Rhyne College
Dr. Larry Hall has been
named executive vice president and dean of
Lenoir-Rhyne College. Mr. Hall is currently serving
as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and
professor of political science at Belmont University in
Tennessee. He will assume his new role on June 1, 2007.
Louisburg College
Dr. J. Michael Clyburn,
vice president for academic affairs and provost of
Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee, has been named
as Louisburg College's 26th president. He will
succeed Dr. Reginald W. Ponder who is retiring during
the summer of 2007.
