  1. There are 36 independent colleges and universities located across North Carolina offering 126 different bachelor's or associate's degrees.


  2. Independent colleges and universities enroll over 80,000 students, more than half from North Carolina.


  3. Almost 1,300 individuals lead North Carolina independent colleges and universities through service on individual Boards of Trustees.


  4. Independent colleges and universities grant almost one-third of the baccalaureate degrees awarded each year in North Carolina, and almost half of the medical degrees and more than 60% of the law degrees.


  5. The average tuition charged by N.C. independent colleges and universities is just over $18,000, well below the national average.


  6. Full-time North Carolina residents receive a Legislative Tuition Grant of $1,950 this year.  An additional $1,350 per full-time equivalent student is allocated to a financial aid fund and made available to students with demonstrated financial need.


  7. The North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities represents independent institutions on issues of public policy.


  8. Eighteen independent institutions offer master's degree programs, four offer doctoral degrees, and seven offer professional degree programs.
